A
'Grading' is a series of tests designed to allow a senior
karate instructor to ascertain if a student has reached
the next level in their karate abilities.
There
are 10 grades before a student can reach 'Black Belt'
level. Each of these grades are called 'Kyu' grades
and are signified by the student wearing a different
coloured belt depending on which level they have
achieved.
Every
three months a grading is held and the student is tested
on three elements of karate. These are Kihon (Basics),
Kata (Preset Forms) and Kumite (Fighting).
The
student must demonstrate to the examiner that they have
trained hard and reached the correct standard before
they will be awarded the next grade.
It
is possible to fail a grading if serious problems are
identified although this is not very common. Occassionally
a student will receive a 'Tempory Grade'. This means
that a major development issue has been identified and
although they can progress to the next grade, extra
improvement will be required at the next grading.
