Grading Info

Black belt or 'Dan' grading are a little different from Kyu gradings.

They are usually held at a much larger venue such as the Crystal Palace Sports Centre in London and carried out by a panel of senior JKA examiners.

The grading begins with Kihon and is followed by Jiyu Kumite (free sparring).

The student will then be asked to choose a kata to perform from a possible list of five appropriate to his/her grade.

The student must pass each of these stages and if successful will be invited back to perform a kata of the examiners choice.

It is possible that a student may only fail a single element of the grading and re-take it at a later date, however the Kihon section must always be passed otherwise a complete re-grade will be neccessary.
